Vestmannaeyjar, sometimes called as Westman Islands, is a municipality and archipelago off the south coast.
The largest island, Heimaey, has a population of 4,135, most of whom live in the archipelago’s main town, Vestmannaeyjabær. The other islands are uninhabited, although six have single hunting cabins.
The islands are famed in Iceland for their major annual festival, Þjóðhátíð – “The National Festival”.
From 1998 to 2003 the island of Heimaey was home to Keiko the killer whale, star of Free Willy
